Painting and coatings services have been the profession of the Phillipp family, owners of Coatings Unlimited (CUI) for five generations.
In 1954, Fred Phillipp Sr. began building the business that became CUI, working with non-family partners. His sons, Fred and Steve Sr., grew up working in the business.
In 1973 the Phillipp family bought out the non-family partners. At that point the “Unlimited” portion of the company’s name really began to take on meaning. Starting with about $100,000 in cash, the family judiciously added services, technology, equipment, and core staff to meet and anticipate their customers’ needs.
Beginning in chemical and auto plants, Coatings Unlimited expanded to specialized projects and applications, such as tank and concrete linings and fireproofing.
CUI has been actively involved with and the Society for Protective Coatings, the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America, and the Finishing Contractors Association. CUI ownership has held various leadership positions in those industry associations, and CUI has incorporated the training and performance standards of those professional organizations in raising CUI’s safety and standards of service.
Steve Sr.’s son entered the business as he had, as a child. Steve Jr. worked in the office and in the field through high school and college. Coatings Unlimited’s family values and professionalism have resulted in a management team with decades of experience.
Today’s Coatings Unlimited is a long way from the company that Fred Phillip started 60 years ago. But it’s still close to the professionalism and family values that have always been part of its tradition.
